Here below the opening speech that I have presented on 19/02/21 in my position as Chair of the International Cost Engineering Council
Good morning and welcome to all of you.
First of all, I would like to introduce myself: my name is Gianluca di Castri, I’m Italian and I’m here as Chair of the International Cost Engineering Council, federation of 46 national associations with a total in the world of more than 300.000 professional members, that are active in the fields of cost engineering, total cost management, project management, project controls and quantity surveying.
I’m honoured to open this congress dedicated to industrial innovation. I believe that innovation is of paramount importance and will be increasingly important in the future.
As all of us are aware of, starting from the beginning of XXI century we have entered a difficult and disruptive time, that will accompany us for the rest of the century.
In 2007, Nassim Nicholas Taleb wrote a book whose title was THE BLACK SWAN, the title was apparently referring to a single swan, in reality an entire flock of them has arrived. We must face geopolitical swans, climatic swans, economic swans, financial swans, energy swans, public health swans and we do not know what else is coming our way.
The media as well as social networks inflate some of those swans so they become huge like prehistoric animals.
The existing technologies are insufficient to cope with the problems that are arising and will arise in the next decades, on the other hand the world needs to progress economic development, with the due attention to the sustainability.
It follows that innovation is and will be the key-factor in those times, because, without the right innovation humanity is doomed to a deep and long recession and our very civilization will be in danger, this is why it is our duty, at all levels, to cooperate and enable the foundational prerequisites for human creativity which is the lynchpin of innovation.
This is what we are trying to do today, and we hope that we can do at least a step forward.
